Mornington Cup

The Ladbrokes Mornington Cup takes place at Mornington racecourse in February each year. Run over a distance of 2,400 metres, the Mornington Cup is worth a total of $300,000 in prize money. The race is held on Mornington Cup Day, which is the richest non-metropolitan race day in Victoria, with prize money on the day equalling more than $800,000. Run under handicap conditions, the Mornington Cup possesses Listed status.

Other races on the Mornington Cup Day program including the $100,000 Listed Hareeba Stakes and the $250,000 Inglis Premier for two-year-olds. Horses that are competitive in the Mornington Cup will often go on to run in major races during the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival, such as the Group 1 The BMW and Group 1 Sydney Cup.

The 2012 winner of the Mornington Cup was Guyno, who won the race by a nose in front of Cedarberg. Prior to his Mornington Cup win, Guyno finished second in the Group 2 Perth Cup at Ascot racecourse in Western Australia.

The eight-year-old went on to win the Group 3 Lord Reims Stakes in his next start before finishing ninth in the Group 2 Adelaide Cup. Guyno has won eight of his 53 race starts and has earned more than $1.3 million in prize money.
