Prince Of Penzance Favourite for 2014 Mornington Cup

The 2014 Listed Mornington Cup is scheduled to jump race nine at Mornington today, with a field 12 set to fight it out for a prize pool of $350,000 and immediate entry into the 2014 Group 1 Caulfield cup in October.

After comfortably claiming the Listed Mornington Cup Prelude event (2000m) last week, Darren Weir-trained Prince Of Penzance is the current $3.50 favourite for this afternoon’s feature, and will jump from the ideal barrier three with regular jockey Michelle Payne on board.

Having claimed two victories and a minor in only four starts this preparation, the Pentire gelding will have to find clear passage early if he is to beat the classy Gai Waterhouse-trained Travolta.

Travolta has found superb form since returning from the spelling paddock in November, adding a second place in the Group 3 Summer Cup (2000m) to victories in the Listed ATC Cup (2000m) and Listed Australia Day Cup (2400m) most recently.

Despite being well-backed by punters in the hours leading up to the Mornington Cup Prelude event last week, Travolta’s stablemate Laidback Larry became embroiled in a fast-paced battle with with He’s Your Man early, only to fade and finish fifth at conclusion.

Waterhouse has a high opinion of the son of O’reilly and considers the four-year-old a top chance for major events throughout the 2014 spring.

Also included in the final field for the 2014 Mornington Cup is classy Chris Waller-trained gelding Instrumentalist.

One of several runners carrying winning form into the Mornington Cup, Instrumentalist strolled in for a victory in the Tile Importer Maiden (2400m) at Caulfield on January 25th, building off a busy campaign that also included wins in the Myer Spring Fashion Maiden (2400m) and Bitalli Handicap (2540m).

Having drawn the ideal barrier four, the Amadeus Wolf gelding will be tough to beat, particularly if leading jockey Craig Newitt delivers a clean ride. is currently displaying the best odds for the 2014 Mornington Cup.
