2015 Mornington Cup the Target for Big Memory

February 3rd, 2015

Trainer Tony McEvoy was understandably pleased with the results posted by Big Memory over his Spring Carnival campaign, and has revealed the five-year-old will be set for the featured Mornington Cup (2400m) upon returning in 2015.

Securing four wins and a further eight minor places over his 19 start career so far, Big Memory finished second to Brambles in the Spring Is The Season Handicap (1700m) first-up on September 13th, and while luckless when blocked for a run and eighth in the Group 3 JRA Cup (2040m), proved he is more than up to the task in taking out the Group 2 Herbert Power Quality (2400m) on October 11th.

Progressing to tenth in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) and impressive minor place finishes in each of the Group 3 Lexus Stakes (2500m) and Group 3 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2600m) most recently, McEvoy told Sky Racing HQ he has been thrilled with the form and class displayed by the son of Duke Of Marmalade since returning to work and is confident of further success through the 2015 Autumn Carnival following an impressive hit-out on Tuesday.

“It was really pleasing to see him come back like that,” McEvoy said.

“I have been super pleased with him at home and he has sort of been suggesting to me that he may have taken another step.

“The trial backed that up.

“He has been quiet sharp in his trackwork and is really in a good place at the moment.

“I was very pleased with him.

“He will just have one trial and I was quite pleased with his condition afterwards, so he will run first-up in the Carlyon Cup in Melbourne on the 14th.

“At this stage I am planning to give him three runs – the Carlyon Cup, the Mornington Cup Prelude and then the Mornington Cup.”

Beginning his racing career abroad in France before transferring to the care of McEvoy for the 2013 spring, Big Memory stamped his claims as a serious staying contender over the 2013/14 summer and early autumn; finishing second in two minor events first-up before taking out the Listed Torney Night Cup (2500m) and finishing second in the Listed Australia Day Cup (2400m) most notably.
