2015 Mornington Cup to Suit Big Memory

March 24th, 2015

Big Memory was unlucky to miss the cut in several major staying events through the 2014 Spring Carnival, but is reportedly in prime condition ahead of Saturday’s featured 2015 Mornington Cup (2400m).

Posting a commendable race record of four wins and a further nine minor place finishes through 22 competitive starts to date, Big Memory returned to racing for a credible fourth in the Group 3 Carlyon Cup (1600m) on February 14th; progressing to third in the Listed Mornington Cup Prelude (2000m) before a luckless performance in the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) last time out.

Thrilled with the form and class displayed by the Duke Of Marmalade gelding over the last fortnight, trainer Tony McEvoy confirmed the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) on Day 2 of The Championships remains his major goal and is confident a step-up to 2400m will play directly into his runner’s strengths in the 2015 Mornington Cup.

“His first two runs were fantastic and I was disappointed with his last start,” McEvoy told AAP.

“Where I was disappointed, from the 450 to the 250 he had an opportunity to make ground and he didn’t. Then when (jockey) Mark Zahra thought he was about to build momentum the run closed.

“So it was a bit of a confusing run. Mark Zahra was not disappointed, but I was.

“I wanted to go through the Melbourne program which I thought suited him better to get to the Sydney Cup.

“The Sydney Cup has been his goal all the way along and the Mornington Cup route was the best one I thought for him.

“He galloped nicely, his action was good. He’s fit and happy.”

Beginning his racing career aboard in Europe before transferring to the care of McEvoy at the beginning of 2013, Big Memory posted several impressive results over the 2014 Australian racing calendar; winning the talent-rich Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) and finishing in the minors in each of the Group 3 Lexus Stakes (2500m) and Group 3 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2600m) most notably.

The 2015 Mornington Cup final field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday today (Wednesday, Match 25th).
